Sponsor an Athlete
The Sponsor an Athlete scheme was set-up by Gap Sports Abroad (in
collaboration with Community Aid Worldwide - charity no.1102107) to
give children from less-advantaged backgrounds the opportunity to
enjoy sports and recreational activities that they cannot afford to
pursue. |

|
Many GSA volunteers have
decided to take part in the Sponsor an Athlete scheme, especially after
working with children in the communities that they have visited. The
scheme also receives sponsorship from a number of people not associated
with GSA who simply want to help less-advantage communities overseas.

Orchard-Lisle… travelled and ‘played’ in Costa Rica
I headed out
to Costa Rica intending to do the typical backpacker ‘thing’ of turtle
beaches, scuba diving, rainforest zip-lines, volcanic springs, Caribbean
surfing and all-round chilling out… But how quickly my experience changed
when I decided to catch some afternoon sun at a park in the capital city,
San Jose! Little did I know I’d be asked to join in a game of football
with the shanty town children! With no understanding of Spanish and very
limited footballing skills, I rose to the challenge, took on the Ticos and
had my best experience by far!
Playing ‘shanty town’ football with the local children made me realise how
much fun you could have (and what close friendships you could make) with
people from a completely different culture, even though I didn’t speak a
word of their language! I was also surprised at how skilful so many of the
boys and girls were, despite most of them only having a pair of tatty old
school shoes to play in! Not only was it a great laugh, it was very
eye-opening.
Costa Rica can be summed up in one word – breathtaking! The diversity of
its stunning wildlife and awesome landscapes, combined with the warmth of
the friendly locals, has made it a country that I’ll never forget… and one
I will always want to return to. As for playing sports overseas, I loved
it so much that I am now spending the summer in South Africa with Gap
Sports Abroad, playing and coaching sports to township children!

"I had an amazing time in Ghana - thank you
for sorting it all out for me because it was excellent. I think my
mate is out there at the moment and I think his friend is too! I had
recommended them to definitely go, and I've heard they're having a
good time. So thanks again for all you did!"

"My 3 months will without doubt stay with me forever. Whether I was
playing beach volleyball, coaching my under 12s team, playing for
Apeteshi FC or just relaxing with the locals I was having an amazing
time. If you're thinking of going away - stop thinking start packing!"

"Ghana, Ghana, great Ghana! People are so friendly here and you often
hear calls of "Obruni" ("white person", but not meant offensively!)
Schooling is very different as well. Art is not really in the normal
education so the standard is really low, and there are barely enough
pencils to go round. I had to stand in front of the class for two
hours on a chair so they could all draw me! It's also great where
we're living and there are volunteers from Britain (mostly) and the
USA, Ireland, Costa Rica, Wales and Australia!"

"Wow... What an experience! I thank you so much for this amazing trip.
The experience to learn, watch, travel, meet and teach was incredible
and no words can describe the attitudes, feelings and emotions that I
felt. Every moment was such a rewarding experience - Not only for my
opportunity to understand the African way of life, but also, having
had the chance to value my surroundings on a deeper level; to be
thankful, to be appreciative, and to have learnt to treasure and
capture each moment of life.

The
purpose of my trip was really defined when I saw the smiles on the
children's faces in my class. With little materialistic possessions,
they still managed to be content with what they have, and more than
appreciative of the help they received from others....they were so
keen, so dedicated, and so enthusiastic to learn. The children, the
people, the volunteers, and the whole atmosphere in general, made this
experience one I'll never forget.
With
thanks for everything, answering all my questions, for putting up with
my nonsense emails and for always being there. I'm sure you'll hear
from me again... I'm wanting to go to another country now!"
