Home / Key Football Organisations / F.I.F.A. / Youth Cup
When President Joao Havelange took office in 1974, one of his most urgent priorities was to establish youth football on a stronger world-wide basis. Within 3 years, he had inspired the introduction of a F.I.F.A. tournament for players aged under 19, held in 1977 in Tunisia for the first time. With the financial support of Coca Cola, the competition elevated to being a World Youth Championship in 1981.
The succession of future stars to pass through the ranks have included many
great stars such as Diego Maradona and Michael Owen, both extremely famous and
talented footballers. The Youth Cup also offers opportunities to developing
countries to play a major part in the finals. Whilst they may not be as popular
or broadcasted as the official World Cup, it is a stepping stone for smaller
nations and gives the younger generations a better chance to become involved in
football and climb the ladder to success. |
