Home / Key Football Organisations / F.I.F.A. / Women's Football Award
For the early centuries of its history and the first seven decades of this century, football has been known to be exclusively a man’s sport. The rough attitude of the game held no attractions for the more delicate sex, and male dominance in most societies served to contain what little enthusiasm women may have shown for playing the sport as it became a major social force in the 1900s. However, as attitudes changed, and women were increasingly accepted as equals to men, they began to enjoy football too. F.I.F.A. did not fail to react to the trend and started a Women’s World Championship, which was held in China in November 1991. The quality of football and the enthusiasm with which it was received entirely vindicated F.I.F.A’s decision. The American women took the new trophy and set new standards for their female colleagues around the world. In the US, around 40% of the regular football players are female. Now there are a total of over 40 million registered women and girl footballers in more than 100 countries across the world. |
