Olympic Games

The Olympic Football Tournament acted as the world’s football championship for the first three decades of the century, before the World Cup was born in 1930. Now, the Olympic Football Tournament maintains its place in the Games programme, but is basically limited to players aged less than 23 years old.

The compromise solution agreed with the International Olympic Committee enables F.I.F.A. to complete its principle of a pyramid of age – groups for male players from the under-17 level through to the World Cup.

At the 1996 Games, the introduction of a Women’s Olympic Football Tournament not only fortified the Olympic spirit but also strengthened F.I.F.A’s efforts to promote womens’ football. The Olympic Football event may be for amateurs but there is a lot of passion involved and as much competitiveness as any other major sporting event.
