Fair Play & Kids

In Northern Germany, The Niedarsachsen Fair Play Cup is an excellent example of how to get children excited about playing fair, and to encourage it. In this cup, there are 4 normal leagues and the usual rules apply, and the winner is awarded the cup.

Over 200 teams are involved between the ages of 12 - 14 and after every game the teams go into their dressing rooms and discuss the attitudes of not only the players, but the manager, trainers, and even the spectators of the opposition. These points are awarded based on a very strict guideline and the scale is between 0-15 points. At the end these points are awarded to the opposing team!

These are given in secret to an official and this way another league table is produced during the league. At the end, the top 20 teams for fair play are awarded a small cash prize.

Then the teams from the 4 different leagues go to a camp together, have fun together and discuss many issues involving fair play, and once again the teams award points to each other. The winner wins another cash prize. This is an excellent way to encourage fair play in football.

In Canada they promote teaching fair play with football, or as they call it "soccer". As part of this initiative they also have a competition, associated with F.I.F.A. where children and teenagers would send in stories and pictures and poems all about fair play. The idea of this was to make children think a lot about fair play in the hopes it would stick with them.

In Nepal, the Nepal Football Academy promotes football to try and encourage the next generation and make Nepal a major footballing nation. The way to do this, is indisputably through the youth. However, they do not only promote football, they promote Fair Play so that their next generation are not only experienced footballers but honourable too. "We do not care about the score, but how our players play the game!"

In Myanmar, their under 17s team won the Asian Championship, and the Fair Play Award in the same year. It was a very proud day for them, and clearly shows that they promote the idea of playing fair, and is a very good example to exert on other teams in Asia.

Play. . . . . .Fair

I love to play soccer,
And I want to keep it clean,
So please play fair,
And don't act mean.

Because that's not how,
The game should be won,
You have to play hard,
But you must have fun.

Don't push and shove,
And knock others down,
If you lose the game,
You don't have to frown.

So remember be kind,
And show you care,
Then win or lose,
You know you played fair.
